DW Blog Party: Day 30: 'Twas the Night . . .

My Aunt sent me this years ago and I've had it saved in my Book of Whimsy. I love this and would like to share it with you ... Happy Reading!

'Twas the Night of Samhain

'Twas the night of Samhain and all through the house,
Not a creatures was stirring except for my spouse.
The incense it burned in his cauldron so black,
For witchcraft and magick he'd a wondrous knack.
The circle was drawn with the athame of power,
The guardians were called to each quarter tower.
The Lord and the Lady attended our rite,
In wonder and glory and power and mite.
The dearly departed came as our guest,
To live once again after their rest.
We bid them goodbye with a tear in our eye,
Such a lovely presence of loved ones so nigh.
The candles danced in the flickering light,
With the Great Rite we bid them all a good night.
The guardians thanked, have all sped away,
The Lord and the Lady, thanks for the day.
The night of Samhain, Gods bless this house,
A circle of wonder 'round me and my spouse.

DW Blog Party: Day 27 Potions & Bottles . . .

Continuing the October Blog Party over at Domestic Witch's place

Today's post is inspired by some beautiful glass etching work by Kit of Kit's Glass Etchings. She specializes in pirate, gothic, zodiacs, symbols of all kinds and even pagan etchings. Lots of beautiful etchings! I just may inquire about some personal bottles of Fae motifs and symbols. That'd be so cool! As I love to have Faerie Dust on stock. I also like to keep certain elements in small bottles and freeze (rain water or fresh snow) them if necessary.

I found out about Kit from Mrs. B's 31 Days of Halloween event on her blog!

These bottles would be perfect for my Gemstone Elixirs. Gemstone Elixirs are empowering and when I need a quick boost- these really help! If you haven't tried it - read on:

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN ELIXIRS

First, clean your stones. Cleanse them with water and a clean brush to get rid of any organic matter. A new medium bristle toothbrush works great for this. Be careful not to brush too hard as some stones require gentle care. Next, clear them of any psychic residue or frequent customer handlings- by putting them in open sunlight for 2-3 days.

Take a small clear sterilized glass jar. Baby food jars work great for this. NEVER ever use plastic bottles or jars for elixirs. And NEVER ever use city or tap water. The chemicals in city or tap water can destroy the vibrational energies of the stones. Use distilled or reverse osmosis water for your elixir preparations.

Place your elixir stones, whose energies you want, into the jar or bowl. You can use a pocket-sized stone, however, we find the smaller elixir sized stones used in pairs work best for elixir making purposes. Tumbled stones are great too. Next, fill the jar with the distilled or reverse osmosis water. Place the lid on the jar.

Allow the jar to sit in the sun and moonlight for 24 hours. Perfectly Blessed by the God & Goddess!

Do not mix stones. Make a separate elixir for each group of stones. Watch to see if an algae forms. That only happens when some stray organic matter doesn't get cleaned out of your elixir stones. No problem. Throw out the water. Re-clean the stones and start over again.

Once the water has been charged in the sun and moonlight and you have tested for growth, put the jars on a back shelf. It is best not to have the jars touching each other if you are preparing more than one batch of elixirs.

HOW TO USE YOUR ELIXIRS

You can drink the elixir. I do and you CAN feel the difference.

You can place them in your bath water, wash your face and hands, or put in a spray bottle and use elixir while ironing. You can also use the elixir for spritzing or watering your plants (you'll need more than a baby sized jar ). For a big batch- I use a medium or large sized silver bowl to REALLY absorb the sunlight & moonlight. It depends on how much you need!

It is best to use to use the elixir within 2 days at most because some mold may form. Sometimes I put them in bottles and freeze them (label ad date them also) if I know I have an upcoming appointment and need that extra boost!

I hope you'll give it a try!

DW Blog Party: Day 25 Black Cat Superstition ...

Continuing the October Blog Party over at Domestic Witch's place

In
many countries, having a black cat cross your path is considered lucky.

I'm not superstitious- any color cat is fine with me. Thing is- hubby is allergic! Bummer!

United States or most European countries and Asia, walking in a black cat's wake might make you quake in your boots.
But if you come from the United Kingdom or Japan, seeing a black cats cross your path will likely make you grin because your luck is about to change for the better.

The direction the cat in question is traveling also counts for a lot.

Leave it to the Germans to have the most precise rule about black cats: if they cross your path from right to left it's considered a bad omen. But if they saunter left to right, the cat is granting favorable times for you. In most parts of the world, a black cat walking towards you is considered a sign that good luck is coming your way, but if they turn around before they reach you, all bets are off.

In Italy, many hold the superstition that if a black cat lies on a sick persons bed, death is not far off.

In China, some believe black cats are harbingers of famine and poverty.

But when Latvian farmers discover coal-colored kitties in their grain silos they dance with joy. They believe these black beauties embody the spirit of Rungis, a god of harvests.

And in Scotland, finding black kittens near your home is a sure sign of riches and happiness to come.

The ancient Egyptians revered black cats and treated them as royalty. In fact, killing a black cat was considered a capital offense. These favored felines were mummified upon their death to preserve them for the afterlife.

Chasing black cats out of your house is thought by some to ensure that yours will not be a lucky home. It is also believed that stroking the fur of black felines will bring health and wealth. Many people around the world claim that there is a single white hair to be found on even the blackest of cats. And if you can pull out that hair without getting a scratch, you'll have a long, happy and prosperous marriage.

A friend of ours has a repro painting of this ... i think it's cool!

The black cat in folklore has been thought to shape shift in to humans as to spy and bring information to their witches or demons and possibly Ingredients such as rosemary to their witches for as to use in spells.

In the middle ages people were very superstitious, to the point where they would kill black cats increasing population in rats and making the black plague less avoidable especially considering the amounts of rats black cats (and cats in general) killed.

Black cats in the middle ages were also believed to be witches' familiars, and some people even believed them to be witches incarnate. Many of these old superstitions about black cats exist to this day.

Black cats have long been associated with witches and witchcraft to the extent that during October, the Month of Halloween, black cats and witches are favorite icons used for costumes, home decor, and party themes. This trend is so embedded in modern society that we've forgotten that the modern holiday we celebrate as Halloween has ancient beginnings as well as names:

~ Samhain ~

The religious year of Pagans starts and ends with Samhain, which is also the beginning of the Celtic new year," according to Patti Wigington, Pagan/Wiccan Guide. Samhaim is also a time for honoring ancestors who came before, Patti explains. All Hallows' Eve
Catholics celebrate the first of November as The Solemnity of All Saints. October 31st is thereby designated as All Hallows' Eve (since the Saints celebrated on November 1st are considered hallowed).

Despite these religious beginnings of Halloween, old beliefs about black cats and witches still play a large part in this holiday.

~ Black Cats as Witches' Familiars ~

It was largely in the Middle Ages that the black cat became affiliated with evil. Because cats are nocturnal and roam at night, they were believed to be supernatural servants of witches, or even witches themselves, according to Glenda Moore.
* Folklore has it that if a witch becomes human, her black cat will no longer reside in her house.
* Some believe that black cats are witches in disguise, or witches reborn.
* Others believe black cats are witches familiars (beings that aid witches in performing their craft). Not all familiars were black cats though; some were cats of other colors, dogs, pigs, or other animals.
* For several centuries "witches" were rounded up, tried, and killed by burning or other violent methods; often their familiars were killed along with them.

Note: Today's post was inspired by the prize that I won from Carolee Clark.
